WHAT'S NEW
|
|
May 2007. In early May, we were able to start disposing of nonhazardous mercury contaminated soil in Minnesota landfills again. This has been a significant cost savings opportunity for many contaminated sites. Give us a call to discuss with us further. May 2007. Sharon Paradise joins Landmark to assist us with office management and accounting. Sharon previously worked at the Metropolitan Council.

MINNESOTA STATE BAR ASSOCIATION (DECEMBER 2006) On December 7, 2006 Ken Haberman spoke on All Appropriate Inquiries regulation. SEMINAR: LIMITING LIABILITY FOR MINNESOTA PROPERTY (OCTOBER 2006) On October 5, 2006, Ken Haberman spoke on limiting environmental liability with the new All Appropriate Inquiries regulations as part of a National Business Institute seminar in Bloomington. Other speakers included MPCA representatives Lynne Grigor and Gerald Stahnke from the Voluntary Investigation and Cleanup Program. MPCA VAPOR INTRUSION WORKSHOP (JUNE 2006) The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency hosted a vapor intrusion workshop on June 15-16, 2006. Vapor intrusion occurs when VOCs – such as petroleum products or dry cleaning solvents – migrate into buildings from contaminated soil and groundwater. Key items include:
• The MPCA introduced risk-based Intrusion Screening Values (ISVs) established for use at Voluntary Investigation and Cleanup (VIC), Superfund and RCRA sites. ISVs include both residential and commercial/industrial risk-based criteria.
• The MPCA published Vapor Intrusion at Voluntary Investigation and Cleanup Sites. This guidance summarizes typical remedial options for vapor intrusion situations. Call Landmark to receive a copy.
Jerry Mullin, a Landmark vice president and project geologist, attended the workshop along with Jason Skramstad, a Landmark senior environmental engineer.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2006 MPCA AIR WATER AND WASTE ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE (FEBRUARY 2006)
Landmark exhibited at the MPCA Air Water and Waste conference in February. Our booth was visited by quite a few familiar faces. It was great seeing those who attended! Highlights included discussions of new MPCA soil reference values, new soil vapor intrusion and restricted residential guidelines.
SRVs The MPCA announced new soil reference values (SRVs) for residential, commercial and industrial properties (January 2006). For example, residential SRVs (RSRV) for lead have been reduced from 400 mg/kg to 300 mg/kg. Similarly, the arsenic RSRV was reduced from 10 mg/kg to 5 mg/kg. SRVs were developed to protect human health and the environment. SRVs are set at different levels for industrial land uses and for residential land uses; industrial SRVs tend to be less restrictive than residential SRVs.
SOIL VAPOR INTRUSION The MPCA published new vapor intrusion guidelines. Landmark recently developed a vapor intrusion fact sheet. Call Jason Skramstad, a Professional Engineer in our Bloomington office at (952) 887– 9601 x 205 to get a free copy sent to you.
RESTRICTED RESIDENTIAL The MPCA’s Restricted Residential land use scenario was defined at the Air, Water and Waste conference. Restricted Residential pertains to contaminated soils in the vicinity of multi-unit residential or condominium developments. Land must be owned or managed by a separate entity, and there must not be intrusive activities in potentially accessible or remote zones by residents.
Give us a call to find out more about these new changes!
